The lie we maintained for 30 years
That writing code is our job. It never was. Even before any LLM, developers spent only 16 % of their week actually coding (Atlassian / IDC State of DevEx 2025). The other 84 % — understanding problems, designing systems, owning outcomes — was always the real profession. Code was the bottleneck, not the purpose.
Agentic AI clears the bottleneck. If you still measure by code volume, you’re optimising the wrong quantity.
Same job title, different job
The lever shifts from typing to judging:
- Before (2022): write every line yourself, syntax from memory, boilerplate = billable hours, juniors write / seniors review.
- Now (2026): orchestrate AI to write the code, architect and integrate, boilerplate = free, everyone writes — the senior decides.
Two data points from 2025/26: Staff+ engineers using AI daily save around 4.4 hours per week (DX Q4 2025), and the PR-throughput edge of daily AI users runs at +60 %.
What gains value — and what loses it
Up: system design, debugging judgment, taste & review, written communication, production ops, mentoring. Down (not gone, just no edge): syntax recall, boilerplate speed, LeetCode grinding, solo-hero coding, framework gatekeeping.
The code-review reset
Reviews used to catch typos and style. Now they catch hallucinated APIs, invented imports, plausible-but-wrong logic and silent security flaws. This isn’t optional: studies find security findings in roughly 48 % of AI-generated code. In a regulated setting, non-negotiable.
Where seniors live now
Architecture, not tactics: strategy → architecture → design. AI handles implementation. AI optimises inside the box. You decide the box.
The bottom line
Engineers aren’t replaced. Engineers who use AI replace those who don’t. Four verbs: judge, ship, teach, adapt.
